Stern Rubber Company’s expertise in injection molding goes back as far as the process itself. Rubber injection molding rubber has its roots in the molding of plastics. In the 1960’s, engineers developed a way to use the same principles in molding plastics to mold rubber, making rubber injection molding one of the most efficient rubber manufacturing processes. The rubber injection molding process works by significantly heating the rubber and using a very high pressure to inject the rubber compound in to the mold.
Compression molding is a rubber manufacturing process that starts with mixed raw material or a special rubber compound. The compound material is either cut or weighed, or a pre-form is created. The pre-forms take the basic shape of the final product. Since the material is compressed between parts of a cavity, more material is required than will be in the end product. This ensures the entire cavity of the rubber mold is filled with compound when the custom rubber product is created.
Rubber transfer molding requires creating a raw mix or rubber compound that is cut and weighed, or made into “pre-forms”. Where transfer molding differs from compression molding is that the rubber is not put into the cavity of the mold then compressed, rather, it is compressed and injected into the mold.
Vulcanized bonding of rubber to metal is a generic phrase that covers all aspects of the process by which an elastomer is chemically bonded to a pre-coated steel surface. Bonding rubber to metal is useful for products the require the strength of steel and the flexibility of rubber.
At Stern Rubber Company, the process flow consists of the insert being cleaned and degreased, drying the insert, application of a primer coat, drying time, application of the top coat, drying time, and molding of rubber over the insert.
